The Secret to a Truly Unique Experience Starts with the Right People

Cherri Briggs wearing sunglasses, a gray jacket, and camo pants with a camera hanging from her neck stands next to a large African elephant, touching its trunk, with the African savannah in the background.

Cherri Briggs

Founder & President

Cherri comes from a long line of pioneers. Her relatives founded the town of Twin Falls, Idaho, when they dropped off the wagon train.  Her family built many of the roads that run through the most remote parts of Idaho and Nevada. Perhaps it was this early life of nomadic adventure that fostered her love of wild places. She became enthralled with Africa as a young girl from reading the books of African explorers and her later studies in Anthropology at UCLA. She founded EXPLORE Inc. in 1992 as a means of pursuing her ever-growing passion for the continent and commitment to helping conserve wilderness and indigenous cultures.

Since then, EXPLORE has become one of the leading African travel specialists in the USA and achieved international recognition. Cherri has received Condé Nast Traveler’s prestigious “Top Travel Specialist for Africa” award annually since its creation in 2001 and has been on Travel & Leisure’s “A-List” for Africa since 2014. She was the first non-citizen appointed to the Botswana Tourism Organization Board in 2014 and was made Honorary Consul for the Republic of Zambia to America several years ago.

After more than thirty years of combing the African continent, from off-road crossings of the deserts of Sudan, Libya and Niger, to luxuriating in the elegant lodges and hotels of Botswana and Cape Town, she remains committed to offering incomparable African travel experiences to her clients and personally seeking the ultimate adventure for herself. Cherri organized the first descent of Mozambique’s unexplored 600-mile Lugenda River and became a member of the prestigious Explorer’s Club in 2003.

She and her husband spend several months a year on the banks of the Zambezi River, where she works via Star Link while surrounded by elephants and lions. In addition to Zambia, EXPLORE has bases in Colorado and Boston, operating across the African continent and in other select nature-based destinations.

EXPLORE has offices in Colorado, Boston, Botswana, and Cherri and Richard’s home office in Zambia.

Richard Wilson

Director, Direct Impact Africa

Richard Wilson and Cherri Briggs married in 2003 in Botswana’s Kalahari Desert with 60 close friends from around the world, including 15 local ‘bushmen’ or San people who performed a traditional trance dance as part of the wedding ceremony. Richard is Director of Conservation and Community Projects for Direct Impact Africa, EXPLORE’s community action arm. The family ultimately settled in South Africa, where he founded Zambezi Trading and exported traditional African crafts and artworks to Europe.
In 2008, Cherri and Richard formed DIRECT IMPACT AFRICA (DIA), dedicated to benefiting the lives of Africans living adjacent to protected areas. Richard dedicates his time to supporting the efforts of community cooperatives in Zambia’s Lower Zambezi near his African home with Cherri. Among his many projects are sports programs for boys, girls, and young adults, school playgrounds, organic fish farms, school construction, girls' and boys' clubs, solar irrigation, electrified fencing for small organic cooperative farms, and medical clinics.
