  • 1. Maputo

    Maputo has a rhythm all its own. Colorful, creative, and full of energy, it’s a great place to start or end your trip. Walk the coast, explore the old neighborhoods, listen to incredible small bands and singers in tiny clubs, and settle into a café for a strong coffee or a fresh seafood lunch. There’s plenty of charm behind the city’s colonial facades.

  • 2. Gorongosa National Park

    Once devastated by war, Gorongosa is now one of the continent’s most inspiring wildlife recovery story. You can explore it on foot, by 4x4, or by canoe, spotting lions, elephants, wild dogs, and more than 400 bird species. The scenery is just as striking as the wildlife: waterfalls, forested hills, and wide savannas stretch dramatically beneath the towering Mount Gorongosa. It is also possible to hike up the mountain, which may remind you of Scotland or New Zealand and other pristine mountain areas.

  • 3. Bazaruto Archipelago

    Just off the coast of Vilankulos the five islands of Bazaruto are picture perfect: soft sand, shifting dunes, and warm turquoise water. It’s a paradise for snorkelers and divers with manta rays, turtles, dolphins, whales and even endangered dugongs gliding past. Between ocean swims and sundowners on the beach, the pace slows down naturally.
