Kenya
Kenya is what most people imagine when they dream of Africa. The Masai Mara's impossibly beautiful landscapes represent the iconic vistas of Out of Africa and dozens of other movies. The golden savannas are dotted with acacia trees and filled with thundering herds of thousands of buffalo, zebra, and wildebeest. There is no more dramatic vista than this with the escapement of the Great Rift Valley in the distance. The herds of course are always followed by the big cats, looking for an easy snack or dinner. You may come across a pair of cheetah lounging under the trees or a leopard hunting in the rocky koppies. Towering giraffe dot the horizon and eagles soar overhead. A diversity of ecosystems offer great contrast, from the huge tusker elephants crossing beneath the snowy peak of Kilimanjaro to the Rift Valley lakes, vibrant with flamingos, to the sands of the far north in Samburu or Lake Turkana.. While the views haven’t changed since Out of Africa, the camps definitely have. Take your pick from traditional Hemingway style safari tents to stunningly designed luxury lodges with 5+ star luxury and food, the choices are mind blowing. Many travelers say on return that the real highlight of safari was their chance to connect with the people, from the Kikuyu, Maasai, Samburu, and 40 other tribes, genuine interactions with the local people provide depth and authenticity to every safari.
