Grootbos: Where Nature Becomes Art

Grootbos Nature Reserve, one of my personal favorite places on earth, is nestled in the heart of the fynbos bio-region of South Africa’s Cape Floral Kingdom on the Western Cape coast in South Africa. Grootbos celebrates the world’s flora from a completely different perspective. You can climb aboard a Land Cruiser for a botanical 4x4 safari, winding through ancient forests, fields of rare flowers, and mountain peaks with sweeping views toward Walker Bay.

Look closely, and an intricate world comes into focus. More than 8,000 plant species thrive across the fynbos, each with a story to tell. 7,000 of these plants exist no place else on earth. Your masterful guides will teach you how a sunbird’s beak is perfectly adapted to reach nectar deep within a flower, why fire is essential to the renewal of the fynbos, and what makes the honey produced by local bees so unique … don’t forget to try the honeycomb ice cream!

Your exploration continues in the Grootbos Florilegium, where artists from around the globe celebrate the region’s flora through exquisite botanical illustrations, often accompanied by the insects and pollinators that bring these plants to life.
