Get Behind WCS’s New Initiative “96 Elephants” and Be An Elephant Hero Now!
When you first hear the words “96 Elephants”, it might bring a smile to your face because elephants are joyful giants with huge ears and crazy long trunks. And ivory tusks. The demand for these ivory tusks (increasing due to East Asia’s thriving middle class) has led to an appalling statistic: on an average day in Africa, 96 elephants will die, brutally murdered so that their ivory tusks can be hacked off and sold.
The Wildlife Conservation Society launched a new initiative powerfully named 96 Elephants calling for a moratorium on ivory trade in the United States (one of the largest markets in the world for ivory sales, by the way). The initiative also supports the seven African nations and their courageous leaders who have already made serious efforts to stop the killing, stop the trafficking and stop the demand. Well-funded criminal networks, corrupt governments and complex laws make this a daunting and sometimes dangerous effort.
Help save Africa’s elephants from further slaughtering and brand the desire for ivory as shameful by joining 96 Elephants first major action: sending 96,000 letters to the Obama Administration calling for a moratorium on ivory sales. All it takes to be an elephant hero is a visit to 96 Elephants excellent website http://www.96elephants.org where you enter your name, email and zip code.
Another way to show your support is a trip to the Wildlife Conservation Society’s website http://www.wcs.org where you can personally type in a message to the Obama Administration and ask them to ban ivory sales along with whatever’s on your mind. On the behalf of these amazing animals -TAKE ACTION.
