Dear fellow EXPLORE Travelers,

Botswana recently instituted the same ‘Yellow Fever’ vaccine requirement as South Africa. There is no risk of yellow fever in Botswana. The government of Botswana only requires proof of yellow fever vaccination only if you are arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever.

If you are traveling from or to any of the countries listed below, you will now need to provide an international health certificate for the yellow fever vaccine.

Declared Yellow Fever countries in Africa: Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic (CAR), Congo- Democratic Republic, Congo-Republic of the Cote d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast), Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia.

Best time to avoid Yellow Fever if you are traveling to any of those listed countries is during the rainy season: January through April

Chances are you will be flying into South Africa before you move onto Botswana, so you will need the Yellow Fever vaccine certificate anyways, since South Africa already requires the Yellow Fever certificate.

What is Yellow Fever again? It is an acute viral disease that is transmitted by the bite from infected mosquitoes. Most people infected with yellow fever do not show any symptoms, while others may experience fever, chills severe headache, nausea, vomiting, fatigue and weakness similar to the flu for typically 3-6 days. There are some rare cases that escalate to more severe issues but a fairly low percentage. How to avoid this? Get the vaccine.
